A health centre was able to stay open throughout the time it took to construct a new extension to the building.

Timber Frame Solutions (TFS) Ltd of Blyth, Northumberland designed, manufactured and erected a timber frame system for the Cestria health centre in Chester-le-Street, Co Durham. The extension increased the existing building size by 50% to nearly 850m2.

A stipulation of the project was that the centre should stay open during the construction work.

On-site, the timber frame system, including the walls, floor and fink truss roof, took only five days to erect and overall the project was completed six weeks early.

The extension is similar to the existing building, constructed using a timber frame system consisting of 89mm stud external walls, with 9mm OSB sheathing and Breather Foil to protect it throughout construction.

TFS installed the intermediate flooring using James Jones I-beams, together with a Proctor flooring system to improve the acoustic properties.
