Lord Carter of Devizes has been appointed the first president of the Forestry and Timber Association. He was Labour’s agricultural spokesman in the House of Lords before becoming government chief whip in the Lords in 1997.

FTA chairman Robert Scott said senior position in the House of Lords would raise the profile of forestry in Westminster and revitalise FTA connections with other politicians interested in forestry and rural business.

Lord Carter said: “I am looking forward to helping the FTA promote the market and non-market benefits of forestry.”

Phil Webb has been appointed chairman of the technical committee. The post means he becomes a director of FTA.
