Canadian timber companies are considering harvesting large areas of forest not scheduled to be logged for several years to combat a pine beetle infestation.

Tom Daniels of Sunpine Forest Products said his company was reviewing its long-range harvesting plans and conducting risk assessments in the hope of preventing spread of the disease.

Parks Canada is to undertake a massive 8,500ha presribed burn in Banff National Park this month and the province has already burned 785 trees and sanitation logged a further 224 this year following discovery of the beetles.
