Environmentalists are planning a counter-attack after losing a legal battle to protect the northern spotted owl from old-growth logging in British Columbia.

They are considering marketing campaigns to tell consumers that if they buy wood products from south-west BC they are contributing to the extinction of the spotted owl, considered Canada’s most endangered bird.

The BC Court of Appeal said economic interests can be weighed against the interest of the species. But environmentalists countered: “We expect the government of India to protect the tiger. We expect the government of the Philippines to protect their Philippine eagle. And we damn well expect the government of British Columbia and the government of Canada to protect our biodiversity here.”
