Doorset manufacturer Russell Door Technology has upgraded its sanding and finishing capability with a specially designed compact Viet sanding line at its Glasgow factory.

The family-owned firm, which started in 1967, specifically requested a compact configuration for the two Viet machines – a Valeria 223C bottom wide-belt sander and a Challenge 223Tm top head machine.

Trymwood Machinery, which supplied the equipment, worked with Viet engineers to create a throughfeed system using invertors to control the feed mat so the leading edge of the workpiece could enter the second sander before exiting the first machine. This required entire electronic synchronisation of feeds and speeds.

Director John Russell said: “We get a wide variety of orders for our factory in terms of dimensions, materials, rated specifications and schedules. This puts major pressure on production without the right equipment.”

Both machines have identical specifications with two calibrating and sanding rollers each, a working width of 1350mm and a 150mm height capacity. Control is via Viet’s new touch screen system which can store 99 programs and monitor belt wear and provide fault diagnostics.

Russell claims the machinery, a “considerable” investment, has reduced labour costs, improved the consistency of finish and added to capacity.
