Fears that massive deforestation may occur if a fuel price increase is not reversed have been expressed in Nigeria.
Environmental groups say the government’s decision in June to hike the prices of petroleum products such as petrol and diesel by about 50% will have far reaching effects.
They believe Nigerians will resort to felling trees for fuel in the country’s already severely depleted forests.
