Vietnam’s measures to protect and develop its forests are paying off.

The minister of agriculture and rural development has announced that by the end of 2002 the country’s forest coverage had reached 35.8%.

Vietnam now has nearly 9.9 million ha of natural forest with around 4.9 million ha protected, about 3.3 million ha for production, and nearly 1.6 million ha for special uses.

The country’s planted forest area amounts to more than 1.91 million ha, with 709,277ha of it protected and the remainder for special purposes and production.

Vietnam intends to continue to take action to protect and develop forest nationwide and hopes to regreen nearly 7.34 million ha of denuded hills and land.
