The new £20m hi-tech Buckinghamshire factory of renowned timber furniture specialist Ercol has won a Civic Trust Award.

The building, designed by Horden Cherry Lee Architects, was one of 43 “outstanding” projects to win an award, which recognises good design and benefits to the local environment or community. Some 550 entries were received by the Civic Trust.

The factory, in Princes Risborough, is known as the “Pavilion in the Park” and was designed with environmental considerations in mind. Issues addressed include control of noise, dust extraction – installed by Moldow Ltd – reduction of utilities and emissions.

Judges described the building as an “unpretentious and subtly articulated structure” which allows the landscape to remain dominant and maximises the provision of natural daylight.

An awards ceremony will be held later this year.
