The head office functions of Forest Enterprise Scotland are to be shared between existing offices in Inverness and Dumfries.
The decision follows a review by the Scottish Executive which decided that Inverness would be designated as the head office, with Dumfries playing a vital support role.
The Scottish Executive said the future of both offices would be secure for the foreseeable future and that the decision reflected the importance of forestry in both regions.
