President Bush has visited scorched areas of Arizona affected by wildifire.

Mr Bush, who visited forests with Arizona Republican senator John McCain, said his Healthy Forests Inititiative would prevent blazes like those which have so far destroyed hundreds of homes in the Summerhaven area.

He said the plan, which needs final approval in the Senate, would help prevent destruction by reducing legal obstacles to logging projects in fire-threatened areas.

Mr Bush also announced that Utah governor Mike Leavitt would be the new chief of the Environmental Protection Agency.
