Timber from sustainable sources was used in the construction of a new arts venue in Brisol.
The Terrace Theatre at Bristol Zoo Gardens provided a challenge to architects invited to submit designs. The aim was to create a multi-purpose facility that would work well acoustically when opened to the lawn. The design also needed to be striking enough to become a central landmark within the zoo.
Hugh Nettelfield of architect Quattro Design Ltd, a specialist in environmentally sustainable architecture, set his team to finding the most imaginative solutions to meet the unusual brief.
He said: “The chosen triangular structure is stunningly different from anything that has been built before. Its many features include the living roof of sedum and the use of sustainable timber throughout.”
The building is steel-framed with a timber-framed infill and TJI joists in the roof. Externally it is clad in softwood, and internally it is lined with Finnish birch ply and the floor is North American oak.
