A new state park has been created in Brazil as part of a WWF-backed initiative aimed at preserving the Amazonian rainforests.

The creation of Chandless State Park in Acre, which covers 2,600 square miles of wildlife habitat and bamboo forest, is aimed at dampening illegal logging activity in the south-west Amazon and reducing illegal exports to neighbouring Peru.

The park represents part of the Amazon Region Protected Areas programme which aims to triple the amount of rainforest in well-managed and protected areas.

Three state forests in Acre have also been set aside for producing timber in a responsibly managed way.
