A three-year investigation by Greenpeace has linked the illegal destruction of forests to large-scale soya farming, and now the environmental organisation is calling on companies to refuse to trade with those responsible.
Under the moratorium, US-based traders are expected to pledge not to buy soya from any areas of the rainforest cleared from now on. They will also stop buying from any plantations linked to slavery.
Under the new deal, traders will be required to check land titles and agree not to buy from farmers who have cleared more than 20% of forests.
