A smelly pouch could save thousands of trees in British Columbia from mountain pine beetle infestation.
Scientists at Delta-based Phero Tech have developed a scent called verbenone which is similar to the scent the pine beetles produce when they have over-infested a tree.
Research director John Borden said this drives the beetles away as they do not want to live in an over-populated area. Pouches containing the scent will be fixed to trees with an industrial strength stapler.
