The Maine Forest Service has launched a “Be Woods Wise” campaign to help the state’s growing number of small wood lot owners manage their land.

More than 5.5 million acres of Maine forestland is privately owned, much of it in small parcels.

Landowners can apply for a free kit containing five brochures and a video showing wood lot management techniques. District foresters will also visit sites and help owners develop a management plan.

The Maine Forest Service says many people do not realise their timber will generate income and advises them to consult a forester to find out what it is worth before allowing someone to cut it.
