The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has been put on the spot about the number of its contracts which have not complied with government timber procurement rules.

Norman Baker MP asked parliamentary under secretary of state Ivor Caplin which contracts had not complied with the Defence Contract condition (DEFCON) 691, which states timber should be from legal and sustainable sources.

Mr Caplin said the MOD placed in excess of 30,000 contracts per year and did not keep central records of those which contain DEFCON 691.
