Hi-tech CNC lathes have transformed the woodturning business of a Sutton Coldfield furniture maker so much that the company has changed its name to Pine Stable Turnings.

Woodturning was originally introduced by company owner Aaron Plant as a sideline to his cabinetmaking business but investment in a succession of Hapfo lathes has led to a rapid increase in demand for turnings. He is now considering phasing out furniture making to concentrate on wood turnings.

Within a two-year period, Mr Plant bought three Hapfo lathes, an AP5000 Hydro-twist, an AP 5000 CNC and an AP 7000 CNC.

The company has secured big contracts to supply stair makers, pine furniture manufacturers, bedroom firms and even restorers with posts, spindles, columns and knobs. About 40% of work is with pine and 60% in hardwoods.

The AP7000 has a bed length of 1800mm or 2700mm and features laser scanning and MegaCAD software. It comes with the four-speed Hydro King twist unit and built-in milling capacity.

The Hapfo AP5000 CNC lathe is available from £45,000 and the AP7000 from £60,000.
