Travis Perkins plc has enjoyed a good start to 2004 with sales up 12% during the first four months compared with last year.

Chairman Tim Stevenson told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting on April 28 that like-for-like sales showed a 2% increase.

He said profit growth in 2004 would be provided by a combination of organic growth and the full-year benefits of the company’s acquisition and brownfield expansion programme.

So far this year, the group has added or contracted to add a net 31 more outlets to its branch network, which numbered 700 at the end of 2003.

In March, the company reported an 18.2% growth in annual pre-tax profits to £162.7m, with sales of timber and wood products continuing to rise.
