JELD-WEN UK Ltd has agreed with major housebuilders and suppliers to standardise its doorset and doorkit lining sizes to aid compliance with amendments to Building Regulations Part E (Resistance to the Passage of Sound).

The Doncaster-based joinery company says the move, designed to correspond with a range of standard wall partition widths, will eliminate certain doorset and doorkit lining sizes, saving production time and money, while reducing the need for wide ranges of stock sizes to be held by merchants.

JELD-WEN’s agreement is with a working group including Travis Perkins, Persimmon Homes, Westbury Homes, Lafarge and Marley Building Materials. The group believes the move will improve build quality, consistency and control on-site labour costs in the construction industry.

The standardised lining thicknesses will be 25mm, to correspond with three standard wall widths: 77mm for standard 75mm metal partitioning systems; 95mm for standard timber stud walling; and 150mm for standard block wall construction within a timber former with dot and dab plasterboard finish.

&#8220What we are trying to do is make sure the doors we are creating match the wall systems that Part E has demanded”

Ian Purkis, JELD-WEN European research manager

Ian Purkis, JELD-WEN’s manager of European research and development, said: “What we are trying to do is make sure the doors we are creating match the wall systems that Part E has demanded.”

Mr Purkis said the industry was “absolutely riddled” with builders and users wanting different door lining sizes.

JELD-WEN says its other door products have been tested at the British Gypsum Building Test Centre, with the maximum 29dB reduction standard in Part E achieved.
