Kalmar Industries has reported a big surge in orders for rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) during the first quarter.

The Swedish-based company said all its sales of RTG cranes, which handle containers carrying a variety of products including some timber, were secured in Europe, the Middle East and Africa during the quarter. It said the sales reflect growing interest in its 16-wheel model and the Smartrail autosteering and container position verification system.

JSC PetroLesPort at the Port of St Petersburg has ordered one 16-wheel unit, while Liscont Container Terminal at the Port of Lisbon has ordered three fitted with the Smartrail system.

Other orders include an eight-wheel unit with Smartrail at Turkey’s Kumport to join its three RTGs already in operation, plus three Smartrail units at Laem Chabang Container Terminal 1 Ltd in Thailand.
