A £293,000 European grant will enable Napier University to develop a web-based timber engineering learning tool designed to help maximise wood use in the UK.

The Timber Engineering Online (TEO) project, being run in partnership with Strathclyde University and the University of Wales, could help fill the skills gap and lead to greater profitability in the timber and construction industries.

A team from Napier’s Centre for Timber Engineering will spend the next two-and-a-half years developing the website to provide high-quality learning via the internet.

Dr Daniel Ridley Ellis, Napier research engineer, said: “Timber is currently under-utilised in the UK construction industry, partly due to a lack of timber design knowledge. The TEO project will ensure the education and training is easily available to anyone who can benefit from it.”

He said the website will help people in the timber industry who need information but are in remote areas and find it difficult to travel to university.

The TEO is expected to provide courses from HND to MSc level, plus modules for professionals who want to develop their careers which can contribute towards an academic qualification.
