Thieves have angered a local community in Scotland by stealing more than four tonnes of timber destined for use in a network of mountain bike trails between Fort Augustus and Inverness.

The wood, which was to be used for sections of timber track raised above ground level, had been donated to local communities by organisers of the recent mountain bike World Cup event at Fort William.

However, the Forestry Commission has boosted the 10 Glens Mountain Bike Group, which had intended to use the timber to build a 360m stretch of trail at Fort Augustus, by donating about half the amount of wood needed for the raised track. The group now hopes the trail will open in a couple of weeks with help from volunteers.

District forester Kenneth Knott said the thieves would have difficulty in using the timber as it had unique security markings and a lot of “very angry people” were keeping an eye out for it.
