An international conference on timber organised by Edinburgh’s Napier University will be attended by engineering experts from around the world.

The university’s Centre for Timber Engineering (CTE) will host a meeting of the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction’s Working Group 18, which specialises in timber structures, at Heriot-Watt University on August 30-September 3.

Presentations are to be made on the use and performance of timber structures, designs and joint systems by experts led by Professor Hans Blass from Karlsruhe University, Germany.

Among the 60 delegates will be Professor Keith Crews of Sydney’s University of Technology. He visited Napier in 2002 to offer guidance on the setting up of the CTE and is returning to offer advice on its development.

Prof Crews will also deliver the first of a series of CTE lectures to be given by architects and engineers. “Timber Engineering: A View from Down Under”, to be held at Napier’s Merchiston Campus on September 6, will detail innovative timber technology used in his recent projects.
