Scotland’s largest privately owned timber merchant, Rembrand Timber Ltd, has acquired the business of Mitchell Timber (Leith) Ltd from the administrators, KPMG.

Rembrand Timber, which has 12 branches covering the whole of Scotland, has grown rapidly since its inception in 1982 – and there are plans to expand the business further.

Mitchell Timber, which has a £1.5m turnover, went into administration on August 6. Its position on the north side of Edinburgh complements Rembrand’s Sighthill branch on the south side of the city.

Rembrand financial director Stewart Beaton said: “We will be retaining the staff, stock and assets of Mitchell Timber but it will trade under the Rembrand Timber name.

“We have plans to expand further – we will be opening a greenfield site branch in Oban within the next few months and are looking to expand into the north of England.”
