A survey by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) at the 100% Detail specifier show in London last month revealed that architects are positive about red oak.
AHEC European director David Venables said: “We believe there is an important message here for manufacturers and if more emphasis was given to red oak it could be more widely used.”
He said the survey also demonstrated the popularity of hardwood flooring amongst UK architects.

At the show, face-to-face interviews were carried out with architects from practices including Foster & Partners, Hopkins Architects and The Building Design Partnership.
Principal findings included a growth in the specification of hardwood flooring; a positive reaction to red oak flooring; and a preference for hardwood floors with character. Nearly 70% of those interviewed believed the solid red oak strip floor on the AHEC stand came from sustainable sources, and 95% said they would consider specifying red oak in the future.
