If logging continues at its present rate in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia, the forests will be completely destroyed in 25-30 years’ time, according to new research.

Greenpeace Russia, Global Forest Watch and ScanEx Research and Development Centre have examined space images of massifs of virgin forests in the European north of Russia where, they say, logging activity is intense.

Greenpeace Russia forest campaign co-ordinator Alexey Yaroshenko said such unreasonable use of forest resources threatened the region with serious social and economic crisis.

And fellow campaigner Olliver Salge said the majority of European consumers realised the environmental value of forest massifs and added: “That’s why logging companies with a poor environmental policy will inevitably face problems selling their products in western Europe.”
