An Indonesian environmental group has claimed that Malaysian timber barons used fake Papua New Guinea (PNG) papers in an attempt to ship illegally logged timber from eastern Papua.

The claim from the Aliansi group follows the seizure of a ship carrying illegal logs near the PNG border. The ship was allegedly chartered to supply two timber companies in Takar, Indonesia.

Aliansi estimates around 200,000m3 of illegal logs from PNG has been smuggled to China and India through the southern Philippines.
