A Malaysian timber industry delegation has visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to gauge how it can capitalise on the country’s construction boom.

Five members of the industry’s working committee on West Asia spent 10 days studying market trends in UAE and Yemen. They also met potential importers, consultants and builders to assess demand and raise awareness about the types of timber available in Malaysia.

One of the committee members said UAE is currently only buying cheaper timber products.

Malaysia exported M$1bn worth of timber to West Asia in 2003, with imports totalling M$309m in UAE and M$82m in Yemen.
