Kenya’s forest cover is still being rapidly depleted despite the logging ban introduced five years ago, the country’s government admitted during a gathering of more than 100 environment ministers in Nairobi.

It said more than 90% of the nation’s original forest cover has now disappeared.

But the timber industry claims the logging ban is hitting the economy through increased unemployment due to sawmill closures. An estimated 100,000 workers who either worked directly/indirectly in the industry are thought to have lost their jobs.
