Record rainfall has tightened supplies of many southern pine products, according to industry newsletter Random Lengths.

Texas and neighbouring states have all received above-average rainfall since last autumn, creating some harvesting problems and resulting log shortages.

Some producers have had lengthy shutdowns, while others have closed on odd days.

A reduced average size of logs has also led to a shift in lumber output, with one producer estimating its volume of 2×10 and 2×12 at about 22% of total production, compared to 35% normally.
