Two hundred of Alpine Automation’s Twin-I beams have been supplied as part of a timber frame package for a new £1.2m Sure Start centre at Briercliffe.

The Twin-I beams, supplied by Driffield-based timber frame specialist Truss2Frame, were used for floor construction at Scarborough Borough Council’s new centre due to their ease of use, structural properties and ability to accommodate wide spans.

The project, currently nearing completion, represents Truss2Frame’s first use of the product on a large-scale building. The company has previously used Twin-I beams on several residential projects.

Glenn Watson, Truss2Frame’s managing director, said using solid timber joists would have required steel as support between centres. Some of the lightweight Twin-I beams were 10m in length and were supported by internal walls.

Truss2Frame, which also supplied the 50mx10m two-storey timber frame structure, now plans to use the product again for a council residential development.

The Sure Start centre, built by local contractor Quibell & Sons, will house pre-natal and post-natal care facilities, a midwifery department, nursery complex, other childcare facilities and office accommodation.
