Brazilian police have arrested two top environmental officials in a swoop to crack down on illegal logging in the Amazon.

More than 90 people were arrested in the operation in the state of Mato Grosso, where nearly half of all Amazon forest destruction took place last year.

The state’s chief of government environment protection agency Ibama was arrested along with Mato Grosso’s environment secretary.

Police said arrested officials are accused of falsifying permits to transport illegally cut wood.

Mato Grosso has an expanding farming sector, with state governor Blairo Maggi said to be the world’s largest soya bean farmer.
