Greenpeace has called on Spain to suspend all its imports of tropical wood from the Ivory Coast.

The environmental group claims the growing trade of timber between the two countries is fuelling conflict and ecological damage in Ivory Coast.

Spanish government statistics highlighted by Greenpeace show that wood imports from Ivory Coast grew by 17.5% in the first six months of 2005, compared to a year ago.

Between January-June last year Spain imported 35,148 tonnes of timber from the west African country, worth €25m.
