Zimbabwe is expecting to boost its economy by millions of dollars through timber exports.

The country’s Forestry Company, set up two years ago, has just opened its first office outside Zimbabwe in Botswana and is due to export huge quantities of timber there to service a hungry construction sector.

Margaret Sangarwe, Zimbabwe’s secretary for environment and tourism, said: “We are in the process of identifying new markets in the region and hope to expand to other regions where timber and some of our resources that are not properly marketed are in demand.”

Mrs Sangarwe said there are positive indicators showing that a substantial amount of foreign currency will have been generated from the venture by the end of the year.
