The US Forest Service has approved plans to cut 370 million board feet of timber from an area of Oregon forest damaged by wildfire in 2002.

Loggers can harvest dead trees from about 20,000 acres of federal land during the next two years.

The fire which killed the trees in the Klamath Mountains of south-western Oregon was America’s biggest and most costly wildfire of 2002, burning across 500,000 acres and costing US$153m to fight.
