Strong timber exports have helped account for a record year for container movements at New Zealand’s Port Nelson.

Figures to June 30 show 51,128 containers passed through the port – exceeding the 50,000 TEU figure for the first time and up on 44,632 TEU the previous year.

As a result of investment in forestry infrastructure for processing sawn timber, LVL and MDF, more value-added products have come on stream and the port has seen growth in timber and other processed wood products shipped out in containers.
