The Bristol Port Company is investing £4.5m in a Kalmar post-Panamax ship-to-shore container crane.
The crane, which will operate at Royal Portbury Dock, will have an outreach of 45m and will handle containers holding a variety of goods, including timber and wood products.
It will be capable of handling 17-wide containerships in the existing deepsea terminal, which has a quay length of 500m on which two ship-to-shore cranes already operate.
The design will be identical to that of a Kalmar crane delivered recently to Interforest Rotterdam, featuring a single box girder and semi-rope trolley.
An electronic anti-sway system will help stabilise the crane, which can be accessed via a remote monitoring interface.
Kalmar has previously supplied reachstackers and light and medium lift trucks to Bristol Port Company.
