A Cumbrian joinery company’s decision to invest in a second Masterwood CNC machining centre has allowed it to re-enter the window market.

Family-run Fallowfield Projects, of Staveley, used to make windows by hand but found the process too labour intensive and not very profitable.

The company’s decision to purchase the Masterwood Atlas KL was also influenced by growing demand on an existing Masterwood Winner 3.2 unit, which was resulting in a bottleneck in the mill.

The Atlas KL’s introduction has allowed Fallowfield to become more efficient and increase output further by splitting work with the Winner, which is now used for staircase treads and newel posts, as well as handling panel work.

The Atlas, which can be fitted with up to four 320mm diameter tools for tenoning, makes staircase strings in addition to windows.

It is used in conjunction with MasterWindow software and is capable of cutting timber lengths to exact window size, tenoning, linear profiling, cutting out glass beads, storm proofing and producing glazing bars.

Masterwood CNC machining centres cost from £40,000-120,000.
