A Carlisle timber merchant and sawmiller has opened a new machine shop comprising UK-built woodworking technology to replace equipment damaged by severe flooding.

Alexandra Sawmills, which is 175 years old, decided to re-equip its sawmill after its mill and offices were flooded in January when the River Eden and other rivers burst their banks.

Nottingham-based woodworking machinery agent AL Dalton Ltd assessed the damage and specified replacement machinery, including Stenner band resaws and Wadkin machinery.

Stenner ST100 and 130 resaws were supplied, while Wadkin technology included a BRA radial arm cross-cut, a rebuilt GS220 5-head moulder, an HT Delta high speed 6-head moulder with heavy duty feed works, a Visage profile grinder and a planer/thicknesser.

Machinery was installed by Dalton engineers, supported by team leader Steve Balchin. Tooling manager Wayne Ellis ensured the technology was correctly equipped for Alexandra Sawmills’ needs.

The company’s treatment facility was reopened earlier this year after Arch Timber Protection cleaned and refurbished the pressure vessels and installed new control equipment.
