The timber trade has shared in the European success of a UK Young Enterprise team.

The North East Timber Trade Association (NETTA), Swedish softwood supplier Siljan Timber and Ahlmark Shipping all made it possible for the Hymers College team, which has started a wooden birdtable business, to attend the European finals of the Young Enterprise competition in Oslo where it came a credible second.

NETTA member Richard Gore, a fomer pupil of Hull-based Hymers College, was asked for help because of his Scandinavian timber connections. He arranged for Ahlmark to transport the team’s exhibition stand, while Siljan provided sponsorship support.

Mr Gore, of Price & Pierce Softwoods Ltd, said: “NETTA, Siljan and Ahlmark were jointly able to help these young people, whereas their competitors from all over Europe were funded and helped by their government departments.”

The Hymers team, which had already won the UK Young Enterprise competition, had been up against competition in the form of vibrating pillows designed to alert the hard of hearing in an emergency, plus a hinge which keeps toilet seats in an upright position.

Team members have now turned their business concept into reality in the form of a limited company called Avian Enterprises, which is reportedly doing well.
