The prime minister of Mauritius has halted construction of a new road through forests following pressure from environmentalists.
Prime minister Navin Ramgoolam ordered the halt after personally visiting the work in Ferney Valley.
He accepted that the road, designed to speed tourists’ journeys from the airport to resorts, would have caused an ecological disaster.
Environmentalists claimed the road would destroy rare flora and fauna.
