Some of Australia’s finest examples of wood in construction have been rewarded in the Australian Timber Design Awards.

The competition, organised by Timber Queensland in association with the Timber Development Association, provided a showcase for a wealth of material including hardwoods, softwoods, engineered wood and panel products.

Overall winner was John Wardle’s Flinders House, a beach home featuring local hardwoods, recycled eucalyptus and Victorian ash in the decorative internal walls.

The house, which also won the interior fit-out award, was described by judges as having a “sophisticated design, showing a thoroughness and attention to detail from interior to exterior”.

Other building projects rewarded included Collier & Reid Pty Ltd Architects’ Narana Creations performance theatre and exhibition building, which won best use of engineered products. It features LVL structural beams and roof trusses, MDF interior wall lining and white cypress shiplapped boards on the ceiling.

Recycled ironbark posts and beams were employed as the main structural element in Sam Crawford Architects’ Bundeena beach house, the winner of the residential class 1 – new buildings (open) category.
