Trade associations are vying to represent the growing composite decking industry in North Amercia.
Groups looking to become the voice of one of America’s fastest-growing industries include the Composite Fence, Deck and Railing Manufacturers Association, the Composite Lumber Manufacturers Association and the North American Deck and Railing Association.
The industry, which manufactures decking made of wood and plastic, is reckoned to have a market adoption rate faster than the changeover from CD’s to MP3 digital music files, with a 35% share of the decking market predicted by 2010.
The need for a strong united voice for the sector was highlighted earlier this year when California considered limiting and, in some cases, banning some materials used in composite decking, as part of new building standards concerning fire.
Industry representatives fought against the proposals and managed to prove that composite decking was no greater a fire risk than traditional pressure treated decks.
Failure would have resulted in the loss of one of the biggest markets in the US.
