New Zealand’s Southern Wood Council is launching a NZ$750,000 training programme in the solid wood industry.
The three-year scheme, backed by forest industries training organisation FITEC, is designed to recognise career opportunities in the sector and help committed individuals gain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.
The first stage will involve recruiting six people, who will undergo an induction programme and gain work experience at three timber companies, as well as taking further training courses. Participants will be paid a salary during their two years of training.
Council chairman Matt Hitchings said: “Our products are being exported throughout the world. To keep our competitive edge we must develop an enduring workforce with the skills and the passion to enhance our reputation in the global market place.”
