One of the first schools in Yorkshire to be built mainly out of ecological material is due to open in March.

Anns Grove primary school in Sheffield, which has used a unique environmental design, forms part of Sheffield City Council’s programme of investment in school buildings.

Leeds-based Arnold Laver Timber World teamed up with joinery company SH Nicholson to form part of the construction team involved with the building.

Arnold Laver supplied timber cladding for outside sections of the school, and a number of internal and external doors.

Chris Stones, manager at the company’s Leeds branch, said: “The structure of the school maximises the benefits of timber and reduces the use of material such as steel and concrete.”

Arnold Laver and SH Nicholson have worked together on a number of school developments.

Steve Nicholson, managing director of the joinery company, said: “This is the first school of its kind and one which is expected to set the trend for many more years to come.”
