Illingworth Ingham Mcr Ltd has expanded its coverage of the Manchester area with the acquisition of merchant Portwood Timber for an undisclosed sum.

Illingworth said the purchase was designed to improve sales volumes and widen its geographic spread across Manchester.

Stockport-based Portwood, which retains its name, is a period mouldings specialist which also offers sheet material, doors, ironmongery, carcassing and bespoke machining. Portwood’s owner Ray Gooding has now retired from the timber trade.

Illingworth chairman Simon Graveley said Portland fitted the group’s operations “like a glove”.

The addition of Portwood gives Illingworth, established in 1929, five branches in the Manchester area, including its seven-acre base in Trafford Park, which focuses on hardwood and softwood machining.

Illingworth’s mill features eight Weinig moulders, including two machines designed to cater for shorter bespoke production runs.

Its customer base includes joinery manufacturers, shopfitters, timber merchants and door manufacturers.

Illingworth’s other branches are at Macclesfield, Stretford and Hyde.
