The stance is contained in a report evaluating the implementation of the EU forestry strategy.

The report, which has been submitted to the European Council and European Commission, also calls for mutual recognition of the two certification schemes to be promoted.

PEFC Council secretary-general Ben Gunneberg said he supported the Parliament’s call for harmonisation and its appeal to further integrate the results of the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe in the political decision-making process.

He said: “Inclusive public timber procurement policies, which recognise certified products from all international certification systems, are an excellent way to encourage the use of certified wood and paper.”
