The new money, announced by the Québec provincial government, brings the level of Canadian subsidies introduced since last September to more than US$3.4bn.

Coalition executive director Barry Cullen said: “This new action is beyond outrageous and makes a mockery of the North American Free Trade Agreement, the World Trade Organisation and the principles of free trade and open markets.”

The coalition is campaigning against what it calls unfair Canadian softwood lumber imports, which it says are “grossly under-priced” due to Canadian lumber-trade practices.
