FEBO, which represents 14 national timber trade federations, believes EN 14081-1 (Strength graded structural timber with rectangular cross-sections) should be fully applied, with each piece of graded timber clearly marked to guarantee its traceability and giving information about product characteristics and the manufacturer.

It agrees that marking could be omitted for aesthetic reasons and in the Case of deliveries to the end user.

But FEBO believes sawmills should have the main responsibility to grade structural timber and affix CE marks. It argues that additional grading by traders is not necessary, while every timber batch should be accompanied with a commercial document bearing CE information.

The association also says extra controls for structural timber with a characteristic bending strength above 30N/mm2 should only be specified for softwoods, not stronger tropical hardwoods.
