The move follows the destruction of 700ha, including 170ha of virgin forest, in Yongfu Town – one of the most important forestry regions in southern China – in less than two years in less than two years.

The People’s Daily newspaper says the officials will investigate local forest plantations and wood-processing factories.

The Forestry Bureau of neighbouring Nanjing County has admitted that some factories had contravened regulations and that more efficient supervision had been instigated.
